The Army began looking for a new light tactical vehicle to replace its old Jeeps in 1979. They wanted a truck with a lot of capabilities that could do whatever the troops needed in the field. They awarded AM General, Chrysler Defense, and Teledyne Continental prototype contracts to design a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HMMWV, which would later become known as the Humvee.
